Can Heart Disease Increase Your Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease?

According to Alzheimer’s.org, “The risk of developing Alzheimer’s or vascular dementia appears to increase as a result of many conditions that damage the heart or blood vessels, these include high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and high cholesterol. Some autopsy studies show that as many as 80 percent of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease also have cardiovascular disease.”

Most of us know that maintaining a healthy diet is a primary factor in maintaining healthy weight and overall well being, particularly for those with a family history of cardiac disease. Early intervention in heart disease includes a healthy heart diet as part of the primary preventative treatment. Foods that are low in cholesterol instead of unhealthy fats are highly recommended to maintain heart health and promote healthy weight loss. But is a heart healthy diet good for the brain as well?  Recent research says yes, in fact new studies may prove that eating healthy for your heart could even promote Alzheimer’s prevention.
